The quick route to fresh bread.

Wayfinding and signage system for the Coop bakery centre in Schafisheim.

The Coop opened the new logistics and bakery centre in Schafisheim with a national refrigerated warehouse, an empties depot, the industrial bakery as well as a confectionery facility in June 2016. Around 1900 employees currently work in the biggest bakery in Switzerland.

Roundabout ways cost time and therefore money, so clear wayfinding is indispensable for a building of this size. The Coop placed the order for planning the wayfinding and signage system with Frontwork, a logistic and planning challenge which our specialists simply could not refuse.

Challenges for specialists

The planning included 180 signs for the wayfinding as well as 600 door and 300 room inscriptions. The installation was distributed over 18 floors, including 9 basement floors (without natural light and a lift in some cases). For comparison: the building covers as much space as 500 Olympic swimming pools. All the work in the hygienic area was carried out in special protective clothing. Each employee walked approx. 15 – 20 km per day.

The ambitious time window from the briefing to the conclusion of the project was 11 weeks. The project was completed on schedule as a result of the close professional working relationship and the continuous exchange of information between the project management of Frontwork and the construction planning office of the Coop.
